Are You Tired Because You Work Hard, or Because You Stop Breathing at Night?
A demanding schedule can leave anyone tired. But a packed calendar is not the only explanation for waking up exhausted. Your sleep might be the culprit. Especially if you stop breathing at night.

Obstructive Sleep Apnea Symptoms
Obstructive sleep apnea occurs when the airway is blocked, usually by the tongue, during sleep. Breathing is interrupted, sometimes many times an hour. Those interruptions can fragment sleep even when you do not remember waking up.
The clues may come from someone else. A partner notices loud snoring, gasping, or pauses in breathing. You may notice morning headaches, poor concentration, irritability, or the need to fight sleep during the day. Some people have few obvious sleep apnea symptoms, so the whole clinical picture matters.
Why should a busy executive care?
First, you deserve to know whether your sleep is restoring you. Your productivity and sharpness during the day depend on the quality of your recovery. You have probably noticed the difference on the days when your sleep is poor and you wake up tired. Your whole day is a battle from there.
Second, sleep apnea often appears alongside health problems that deserve attention, including high blood pressure and certain heart rhythm disorders.
And, lastly, untreated sleep apnea is a major risk factor for cerebrovascular accidents, or strokes.
What should you do?
An evaluation begins with a conversation about your sleep apnea symptoms, medical history, and risk factors. Snoring alone does not establish the diagnosis. Likewise, the absence of snoring does not exclude the diagnosis.
A doctor may recommend a home sleep apnea test or a more detailed overnight sleep study. The right choice depends on your circumstances.
If testing confirms sleep apnea, treatment may include a CPAP device, an oral appliance, weight management when appropriate, or other measures. The best option depends on the severity of the condition and your ability to use the treatment consistently. Many people notice a meaningful improvement in how rested they feel when treatment works for them.
Everyone who feels tired should not assume they have sleep apnea. Even so, persistent exhaustion should raise our suspicion that it is more than a badge of personal commitment and burning the midnight oil.
If you have sufficient time in bed but still wake unrefreshed, especially if someone has noticed pauses in your breathing, let’s talk about it. A good night’s sleep should do more than occupy hours on the clock!
